Isabelle M. Battuello, 87, of Superior, died Friday, October 9, 2015, at Middle River Health and Rehabilitation Center from complications of Parkinson’s Disease. Isabelle was born October 15, 1927 in Laurium, Michigan, the youngest of three children of Oscar and Ragna Niemela. She was raised in Laurium, graduated from Calumet High School and was proud of her Finnish and Copper Country heritage. Isabelle married Joseph P. Battuello on June 4, 1949 and together they raised two sons and made homes in Laurium and Hancock, Michigan, West Allis, Wisconsin and then the Billings Park neighborhood of Superior since 1964. In Superior she was an active member of Pilgrim Lutheran Church and its women’s group as well as the Superior Women’s Club.
Isabelle liked crossword puzzles and was known for her daily neighborhood walking routine. She will be remembered by many for her extensive correspondence over the years, sending countless birthday and Christmas cards to family and friends until she could no longer write.
Isabelle was preceded in death by her parents, husband Joseph in 1984, brothers John and his wife Mae, and William and his wife Norma. She is survive by those she loved: sons Dennis (Deborah) and Gary, granddaughters Kati (Al) Reich and Lindsay, and her latest wonders, great-grandchildren Theodore and Willa Reich, as well as numerous nephews and nieces.
The family wishes to express their gratitude to the staffs of Middle River and Lighthouse of Superior for the wonderful care Isabelle received in her last years.
In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, Isabelle requested that donations be made in her memory to St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church 146 Tamarack Street Laurium, MI 49913.
Visitation will be held at the Erickson-Crowley-Peterson Funeral Home in Calumet on Thursday October 15, 2015 from 5:00 -7:00 p.m. A Graveside service will be held on Friday, October 16, 2015 11:00 am at Lake View Cemetery, Section 51 with Pastor James Fundum to officiate.
