Basil Sandretto, 87, of Calumet passed away Monday, November 3, 2014 at Houghton County Medical Care Facility.
Basil was born on June 14, 1927 in Calumet to the late John and Louise (Longpre) Sandretto.
He attended the Calumet schools. He was a veteran having served in the U.S. Navy.
Basil worked in the mines locally for C&H, the Homestake Mining Co. in South Dakota and in White Pine. For a short time he worked at Detroit Diesel and as a cook on the ore boats He retired in 1973 due to a disability.
He was married to Catherine Vertin on October 9, 1948 at the Sacred Heart Church in Calumet.
He was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Calumet and the Foresters of America Court North Star #17 and the American Legion Post 90 in Lake Linden.
Basil loved Isle Royal National Park where he visited often. He also enjoyed spending time fishing, tinkering in the garage, and working in his garden caring for his rose bushes. He also enjoyed his time and winters spent in Florida, with his wife for 24 years.
Preceding him in death was a brother Raymond and his son Basil Jr.

Daughter: Pattie (Glenn) Grinus of Zion, Illinois
Sons: Don (Rae) Sandretto of Ishpeming and Bill (Sharon) Sandretto of Calumet
5 Grandchildren: Steven Sandretto , Michael Sandretto, Angela (Chris) Eagling, Jesse Sandretto and Allen Grinus
3 Great Grandchildren: Jake and Alli Eagling and Holly Sandretto.
2 Sisters: Isabelle LeVeque of Waukegan, IL and Nathaleen Curtis of Lac La Belle
Brother: Ralph (Nim) Sandretto of Florida
Numerous nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, November 5, 2014, at 11:00 AM in the Sacred Heart Church in Calumet, with Fr. Abraham Mupparathara to officiate.
Friends may call at the church on Wednesday from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM.
